Savannah Georgia: A Home Tour

When I visited Savannah earlier in the Spring, I was with a friend who loves gawking at beautiful homes as much as I do.  We pulled onto a side street and despite the humid, hot temps, we hopped out of our air conditioned car and strolled a few blocks admiring the beautiful old homes.  Now, that's house love!

One of the first things we came across was this wonderful gate.   I'm loving those pineapple finials.

A pretty home with beautiful window boxes...

I couldn't help but admire the iron work and the real "working" exterior shutters on this home.

A view down E. Victory Drive, lined with Live Oaks dripping in Spanish moss.  The pictures don't really do this view justice.  It was so much prettier in person.

The view looking the other way...

Gazing up into one of the beautiful Live Oaks lining this drive:

This house has a fairytale entrance.  I wonder how they decide how far to let the ivy grow and where it has to stop.

Look how perfectly straight the ivy is across the front of this home.  I love the windows on this beautiful old home.  Again, how do you decide where to stop the ivy and where to let it grow?  Ummm...

Another pretty home...

This was my favorite home on our little walking tour.  It's on a corner and this was the side view.

I'm pretty sure the style of this home is "Dutch Colonial."  I love the roof line/shape you saw in the side view and I especially love this huge front porch.  Just look at the windows surrounding the front door.  Absolutely beautiful!

This was my friend's favorite house on the tour.

The gardens out front were so pretty.

I never realized until I put this post together how many homes in this area had ivy growing up the front.  I hope it's not the invasive kind that can damage brick.  It is a beautiful look, although the brick that's gradually being hidden on this home is really pretty, too.  How do you like the fencing and the gate?  Beautiful, isn't it?

Hope you enjoyed this walking tour of a few of the homes in historic Savannah, Georgia.

Such beautiful homes! Although I'd be afraid of the ivy doing damage, I can appreciate the beauty of it. Love all that hanging spanish moss! So romantic! Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful! I love Spanish moss. My drive into work in Coral Gables has the same type of view with oaks covered in moss. It is my favorite drive.

I love the moss and the ivy! I recently planed Boston Ivy to cover my large, blank walls. It's growing really fast! Yay!
Beautiful homes...and great inspiration!

GORGEOUS homes, Susan! I do like the ivy but like you said, some of it is hiding some beautiful brick! The south just calls my name but I know I will never live there. So thank you for these walk around posts, I love seeing these gorgeous homes! XO, Pinky

I love Savannah too. Me and my daughters just got back from Savannah on the 2nd. I too adore all the homes down there and the spanish moss on all the trees fascinated me. The next time I go will probably be in the Spring because it was soooo hot down there a couple of weeks ago. I am posting our trip in a couple of days if you want to check it out.

Savannah it's so beautiful. The homes are great with nice trees and your trip seems so serene and quiet, maybe with a bird, or two chirping...while I like them all I really love the last house, maybe the beautiful fencing?! Have a nice Saturday. FABBY

Love the ivy on the homes but would not like having to keep it cut back. Didn't know there was an ivy that wouldn't damage the bricks. My favorite house is the Dutch Colonial...love the gambrel roof!
Thanks for the tour!

Yes, English ivy can do damage to the bricks, rather the mortar. My parents had ivy on their house for many years. After my dad died, Mother couldn't keep up with the invasive ivy, so she worked for months to get it off the house. Not an easy task. It holds on for life!

Hi Susan Sweetie...
Thank you so much for sharing this tour with me today. The oak trees are so beautiful. I love seeing them line the streets. I love seeing the ivy grown on the house. How pretty it is. Everything is so beautifully manicured. A fairytale neighborhood. I have never been to Georgia, so thank you for taking me along.

I love beautiful old homes and this makes me want to go to Savannah, a city I've never seen!!
Interesting how they have the ivy growing in a straight line, huh? Personally, if I were going to grow ivy on my house, I would want it creeping up the walls with a more wild look to it. :) But the question continues...how do they keep it in straight lines...wonder if they apply something on the bricks to keep it from attaching and growing? :)

Hi Susan,

I was looking for your "Miracle" post, but I'm so glad I had a chance to enjoy your wonderful Savannah home tour. Love all the houses, but the one with the ivy and the beautiful fence in front is truly special! Like you, I hope the ivy isn't harming the bricks and mortar! I love the look of ivy-covered tree trunks as well, but that's supposed to be harmful too -- always something to worry about, right?

Hope you're having a great weekend!

Warmest regards,
Bill

P. S. I'll be back for your MM post!

Delightful!
Like the Dutch Colonial a lot!
I saw one this past week and thought oh my i could just move in. It's close to the Governor's Mansion in Topeka. Across the street was farming ground with hay bales. Pretty like a picture.

Take care,
d
