Biltmore Estate

A while back, I had an opportunity to tour Biltmore in Asheville, NC. I'd been there many years before and really enjoyed the tour, but I remembered having been a little disappointed that so little of the upstairs was open for viewing.

Well, all that's changed now and it's an awesome experience! They continue to restore more rooms each year, so more and more are opened up for tours. The tour took us 1 1/2 hours...and it was amazing! Visiting Biltmore is truly an unforgettable experience...if you haven't been, I highly recommend it. You may read more about Biltmore by visiting HERE.

(Picture from Biltmore website)

For this Pink Saturday, I wanted to share some pics I took while visiting the gardens around Biltmore. There is so much to see and do on the grounds of Biltmore...you really need a few days to see it all.

As you walk down the long set of steps off to the left side of Biltmore...you begin to enter the Italian Garden.

The following photos of the pools, were taken in the area you see off to the left of Biltmore in this pic below... (pic from Biltmore website)

There are three, large, symmetrical pools in this garden area and they are filled with water lilies and Egyptian lotus.

Wish I'd thought to take a bigger view of this whole area for you...

Some of the fish swimming in the pools...

As you're walking down along beside these huge pools, you look up and here's your view. It's the far left end of Biltmore. This area also contains lot of beautiful, classical statuary.

We continued on into the gardens, which were tremendous in size...so many, many fabulous perennials. I'm afraid I didn't take as many pics as I probably should have...just found myself enjoying the beauty. Here are the few that I did take.

Beautiful echinacea (Purple Coneflower) with a busy little bee...

I couldn't get enough of this conservatory...isn't it amazing!

Just outside the conservatory...

Now we're inside...

Do you see Mr. Bee?

I think this was taken inside a smaller green house that is located close to the conservatory...

Another view of the conservatory... aren't the mountains breathtaking?!

I have heard so much about this fabulous place- thank you for sharing your visit with us! It truly is amazing to think a family lived in that huge mansion! I wonder if it felt cozy and warm to them? I wouldn't give up cozy and warm for any amount of square footage!! (though I would love a gorgeous conservatory like that!)

What wonderful memories you've stirred up... we visited Biltmore on our honeymoon in 1975... driving the Blueridge in a teeny maroon convertible. Wonderful to see it hasn't changed.

Happy Pink Saturday :-)

Happy PS, Susan! I've always wanted to visit The Biltmore. I was first introduced to it on America's Castles. I wish pbs or amc or which ever station it was would bring back that program. I loved seeing the rooms and hearing the stories about the people who built America's grand homes! I'll never forget how beautiful and amazing Hearst's Castle is. First time I went I was 12, then again at 21.

Great photos! Thanks for taking us along!

I am fortunate enough to live about 30 minutes from Biltmore House. We are passholders and visit the house and grounds at least once a month. There is always something going on there, from wine tastings, Friday nights with live music at the Arbor Grill, festivals, summer concerts, etc.

I too highly recommend going to see it if you are in the Asheville area...and if any bloggers are, I would love to meet them!

When did you go Susan? Wish I could have met you there!
Hugs,
Penny

Thank you, Susan, for bringing back wonderful memories of the Biltmore. It's been 30 years since I last visited. I think that today, I would appreciate it so much more.

I had no idea that cone flowers were "echinacea". That's one of my favorite home remedies...an echinacea bath when I feel a cold coming on. Thanks for teaching me something new today.

Happy weekend..

Thanks for the great tour...My husband refuses to visit Biltmore after he heard what the admission is....he felt they didn't need any more money...It certainly is beautiful...a friend went recently and when I asked her if she saw Anderson Cooper's portrait she said...(Like I was the dumb one)
Why would his portrait be at Biltmore....when I said he's Gloria Vanderbilts son she still didn't get the connection....She didn't think Gloria is a "real" Vanderbilt...

Oh Susan, we adore the Biltmore! We take the children EVERY year for the Easter Egg hunt on the front lawn! It is truly an amazing site to see, all of them dressed in their Easter best in front of that amazing home. We missed this past Easter but have already planned for 2010!

Hey, I see some things that we missed when we visited there in 1998(?)or it is new. We have been in the Breakers at Newport, the one in Hyde Park and Biltmore in Ashville, and my favorite is still the one in Newport, but I think this is largest. Hope you were able to visit their beautiful gift shop..it is to die for!
