Found: A "Something's Gotta Give" Table...Sort Of

A while back I shared a tour of the wonderful beach house in the movie, Something's Gotta Give, HERE. In one of the scenes in the movie, specifically this scene in the bedroom of  the main character Erica Barry (played by Diane Keaton) I spied the cutest little table.  Well actually, it isn't that little, but it's definitely cute.

Just prior to watching the movie, I had been on an all out quest for a small chest to go beside the green and white floral Rosalie chair in my office.  Since I hadn't been able to find a chest I liked, I started looking for a table like the one pictured in this scene.

In the end, I found the chest I really wanted, so all turned out well.  (You can read about that in THIS post.)

It's a good thing I found the chest because it turns out the table in the movie, Something's Gotta Give was definitely more than my office budget would allow.  (Pssst:  If you're looking for the table in Something's Gotta Give, Rose Tarlow carries it and it's called the Nantucket Side Table.  You'll find a link to the Nantucket table in THIS  post.)

During my search for an affordable table like the Nantucket table, I came across this table below at another online store, Cottage Chic.   Notice the similarities.  I loved it, too...but again, at $636.00, it was more than I wanted to spend.

So, imagine my surprise when I was shopping in Marshall's and spied this cute thing.  Hold the phone!   It looks a lot like those other tables, doesn't it?  It's called a "Fleur De Lis Round Accent Table."  The design does look like an upside down fleur-de-lis.

It's a fair amount smaller, but it's also just $79.99!  I had exactly $80 left on a gift certificate I've been carrying around for a while, so I went for it. I think I know where I'm going to use it...just trying to decide if I'll paint it a different color or leave it as is.  I'm pretty sure I'll paint it....maybe with some of the Annie Sloan chalk paint.  By the way, if you live in the Atlanta area and you like this table, they still have one more left in the Smyrna store.  Did you know Julia Roberts hails from Smyrna?  Yup, it's true...random trivia fact thrown in for fun. :)

So, what color would you paint it?  I definitely want to leave the darker tones in the grooves visible to accent the carving.  Would love to know your suggestions.  I guess I should show you where I'm thinking about using it, huh?  That would help, wouldn't it?

I'm thinking about placing it here in front of the bookshelves with a small chair beside it.  Sometimes I need another small chair in this room, a chair someone can pull over to the computer when we're looking at something together.  I tried it out this evening and the table fits nicely over there since it's not very big around.  I think it will be pretty there with the backdrop of the bookshelves.

Should I paint it a cream color, similar to the other colors in the room, or a  nice accent color that pops again the shelves?  I'm leaning toward an accent color.   HERE's a link to this space if you would like to see the other colors in the office.   I'm pretty sure I don't want to paint it green...have enough of that color in here already.

Do you like Annie Sloan paint?  Have you ever used it?  I haven't used it, yet...but I hear it's great.

See you tomorrow morning for Tablescape Thursday!

Update:  Lizabeth found it in a cream color in her local TJ Maxx.  After a brief search, I located it in our TJ Maxx, too.  Still not sure if I'm going to keep it...trying to decide if I do want a seating group in that area of the office or not.  Thanks Lizabeth for alerting me to the cream color!  I like this color much better.

  2. You're so good with color, I know you'll make the right choice. Maybe a shade of yellow, somewhere between the bee and the walls. Can't wait to see it! ~CJ

  5. I agree with Tombstone Livestock, the green out of the chair. It would be a great accent piece and bring a bit more color into the room.

  6. I can see your cute table painted a yellow-gold color to match your bee pillow. I have not painted anything with ASCP, but I have two quarts that I won in a giveaway. Can't wait to see what everyone's been talking about.

  7. Oh.my.side I love that table!! And I just finished my first Annie Sloan project turning an entertainment center into a hutch for my dining room. Let me tell you...that was the easiest paint evah!! There's a blog I found that is completely dedicated to ASCP called shades of amber. They have tons of idea colors you could look at. And also a store called Chalk it Up paint in Norcross is an ASCP stockist. Lynn helped me when I ordered mine!

On another note, one of my very dear friends grew up in smyrna and actually went to high school with Julia Roberts! Neat huh?!

Have fun with the painting!!! You'll be hooked!

I'll check out that blog...thanks for the tip! Oh, so I wouldn't have to order the Annie Sloan paint...could just go buy it in Norcross...excellent! So helpful to know, Amanda...thanks!

  10. That table is killer cute! I saw one like that in a shop once and was head over heels for it. Of course it was in the "lux" price range.
That table at Marshals is adorable!

  13. Nice find Susan. My gut instinct would be to paint it the cream of your desk or a colour to compliment your walls. Even a cream wash over another colour, would give you a finish which is not so solid as the one already on the table. Have not heard of the paint you mention.

  14. Oh I think it will be perfect kind of layered in front of the bookcase...leaving it the same color would give it a real designer pop of color...love it...phyllis...always love seeing Matilda in the room (thats what I have bamed the maniquin) maybe for short I will call her Matty...lol take care..phyllis

  18. First I'd like to see it set in the room and how it feels! I think a pop of color is a great idea- you have a ton of soft ivory already. I would look to your chandelier for inspiration! Pink, Green, Yellow :-)

  19. A trip to Marshall's is now on my agenda!
Thanks for the tip! Love your room, you lucky gal!

  21. Ideas........I would go to the Pottery Barn website and see their paint suggestions for the Bedford Collection. A cream...light colored choice would be perfect. Then enhance the tabletop with silver knick knacks of a combo Queen Bee &Fleur de Lis items. How about a tree with silver charm hangings. Whatever way you prefer! Enjoy every minute of the hunt. Art at it's finast.

    Carpe Diem...xox Moy

  22. I love that table!! I'm in NC so by the time I could get to GA it would be gone :(

I also love ASCP! I've done several things and have more planned. So easy to use!

  23. what about red?--compliment to green? Orange as seen on the bookshelves? or even purple--compliment to yellow??

  24. What a find! Your space is just gorgeous. I think I would paint it similar to the original Nantucket table that you liked in the first place. I don't think you can go wrong though!

  25. Is that turquoisy-green too turquoise? I was thinking a cream (I think one called Old White is used a lot) over it, then sand it down a bit to let the original color show through? I think I might like the little splash of that color in your room???

I'm getting up the nerve to try AS, because we read so much about how easy it is to use. Painting is usually not my thing. :)

  29. Isn't it nice when you find something for such a bargain price? It's lovely...I like the neutral colour of the one from the movie, but I'm sure whatever colour you paint it, it will be beautiful! xo

  30. I want that table!!! Our Marshalls is a "mini-Marshalls" so it rarely has the "good" stuff. But I do seem to find some good stuff!

  31. A great find! I just bought some Annie Sloan paint yesterday and did a post on it..I am very anxious to try it. I also so love the table on "SGG" I have that movie DVR'd and play it all the time. So great when you see little things that you do not notice before..that house is definitely to die for!

  32. What about putting a white glaze over the green? When we redid our kitchen, I ordered a grey peninsula with a white glaze, and I love it. It ties in with our white cabinets, and your table would then tie in with your white shelves.

  33. Well this is another cute idea for this great room. I see so much of the desk furniture color, I think you need to get the colors of the existing chair over to that new area either with fabric from the chair or with the green paint. What will the new chair be? Perhaps it can have a seat cushion with the same fabric. If you don't have any fabric, then I think the table should be painted in the same green.

  34. I am smelling a theme going in this room and I think the perfect color is..........*drum roll*
Paris Grey! Give it a look. Great post.

  35. What a lovely table! If you want "pop" but also want it to complement the "feel" of the room, why not pull a yellow from your desk chair cushion, or from the Bumble Bee on the pillow resting on the easy chair? Just be sure to pick a yellow that has the same undertones of the furniture. The other choice (if it were mine!) would be an apple green, again making sure it plays nicely with the other greens you have in the room.

  36. What a wonderful table. Don't you just love it when you have a vision in your head, and then you actually find it! I scour Marshalls at least weekly! I'm hooked on ASCP, have used it on a few pieces, and have several more projects in mind. Luckily I finally have a local stockist, but when I first ordered, I also found Shades of Amber to be a wonderful source (they ship promptly). Their sample paint deck is well worth the small investment; it shows each paint color finished with both clear and dark wax. Check out their site for painted pieces in every color. I look forward to seeing the sweet table in your beautiful office.

  41. Looks great to me...smaller, as you say, but still a great little table.
Whatever you choose to paint it, I know it will be awesome.
Thanks, too, for the heads up on another editing site.

  42. I think there needs to be a pop of color, what is the chair you are going to use with it, it would need to blend or at least coordinate. But you need a little pop of color. The first time I invisioned it, I saw a pink, maybe Scandinavian Pink, but if you want to stay with the colors in your fabrics, then maybe Duck Egg Blue, lighter than what is on there already...but I love the table! You will find that you actually use that little table a lot! Good find! Donna :)

  43. I adore this little table. And I think you should paint it green to go with your chair and then do a white wash over it. Just an idea!

  44. I have used ASCP a lot!! and I have to say I love it...it's very forgiving. (I've accidentally shaken the the lid off and it went all over the kitchen counter and floors and my clothes and it cleaned up in a breeze!) I like that it can be thinned out with water or left open to thicken up. Painting with it is a cinch. If you ask me I'd paint it a coral-y color, its a natural complement to the green and would go well with the creamy walls!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I say cream like the other pieces and add the color with your vignette. JMHO. :) Cute table!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Yellow! I vote light yellow! It would pop against the bookshelves and compliment the chandelier and chair. I like the thought of painting it black, but think it would add too much weight to that side of the room. I'm all about balance in my workspace. If you decide not to use it in there, I think it would look great in a hallway or on a sunny deck. Just a thought! Can't wait to see what you do with it.
