A few days ago I attended an auction with my friend, Maryellen. The auction was ITP as Maryellen likes to say: inside the perimeter...meaning in Atlanta. It's been years since I went to an auction and I've never attended one quite like this. The auction was held at a place called Gallery 63...have you heard of it? Just look at all those wonderful chandeliers!
As you can tell in the pic below, we were sitting fairly high up. We were sitting on wooden bleachers and it turned out to be an awesome vantage point for viewing the auction.
Gallery 63 auctions are apparently a pretty big deal. Turns out, they are on the Discovery Channel every Tuesday evening at 9PM! See the camera man below? Their show is called Auction Kings. Have you seen it? Since I watch so little TV, I only subscribe to basic cable so unfortunately, I don't get the Discovery Channel.
It was super crowded. Maryellen told me when she attended the auction two years ago with a friend, there were lots of empty seats...maybe 25 people were there. It's very different now, by golly. We were packed into those bleachers like sardines! Everyone was so friendly though, extending a hand to help you climb up to sit wherever you could squeeze in. You have to be willing to get pretty cozy with your neighbor...either that or stand, which wouldn't be much fun. Lot's of folks who arrived closer to the actual auction starting time, did end up having to stand.
I'm not sure when this past Sunday's auction (September 18th) will air, but when it does, you'll probably be able to see us in the bleachers because we had LOTS of TV cameras pointing our direction throughout much of the auction. You can see three of them in the picture below.
The auctioneers have a lot of fun joking with the crowd. The older gentleman started things out and the younger auctioneer (with the raised hand) took over after about half an hour.
This mantle clock went for around $70...not a bad price. That's about what I paid for my mantle clock 30+ years ago.
See the guy in the navy short-sleeved t-shirt who is pointing to the left (his right) in the pic below? His name is Paul Brown and he is one of the owners. If you've seen the show, Auction Kings, you probably recognize him.
We didn't stay long enough to see what the human skeleton went for...talk about a Halloween prop!
One thing we noticed about the auction...they sell everything from expensive oriental rugs and furniture to Saturday Night Fever posters featuring John Travolta.
Once the auction began, everything moved at a rapid pace. The people you see in the royal blue shirts bring all the merchandise out onto the stage.
The auctioneers walk up and down the center isle and across the front, always moving, always talking. Everyone running the auction is moving and in constant motion...and I do mean constant! The term, "organized chaos" come to mind.
Anyone need a sideboard?
How about a Viking helmet, complete with a pony tail and horns? Yep, you can find almost anything at Gallery 63...even a Vampire Killing Kit.
Have you ever attended an auction at Gallery 63 in Atlanta or watched their show, Auction Kings, on the Discovery Channel? The auction was a lot of fun...I would definitely go back.

Of all of the flea markets and thrift stores I have been to, I sad to say that I have never been to an auction.
ReplyDeleteI saw a sign in one of the adjacent neighbor hoods about a house auction...the Sunday after.
I certainly need to look a bit more to see when they are. I would love to take part in an auction.

How neat!! Me and the hubs watch this show ALL the time! Did the auctioneer say , "ya bought it" after every sale? My husband thinks I'm a dork because I repeat it in his same accent every time he says it. haha! It looks like a really good time!!
ReplyDeleteThat is so cool! I have seen this before but only once. I think it must have been a premier or something because it featured the owner and his young son and a few auction pieces that they were determining the value on. I remember it was very classy looking auctioneer. I'm glad to know what channel it comes on now so I can see it again. I would have loved to get a bargain on that big sailboat in the background. Looks like a fun time!
ReplyDeleteSusan, what a place to be, oh my heavens! I'll have to tune in to the show now, looks like a real treat to me! Lucky you to have been there!
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful day~
Nancy
Oh man, I'd love to know what they sold the skeleton for! (I love Halloween!)
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a lot of fun!
Oh my husband and I love that show, we watch it weekly. Some people bring in the most craziest things. Last week it was dinosaur poop. No joke. Some one bought it too. lol. Goes to show you some people will buy anything even fossilized turds.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you got to experience it live and in person. I'm sure you can catch a few episodes online. I have never been to an auction but would love to one day. Sounds pretty fun.
Thanks for sharing.

I used to attend Auctions with my father-in-law years ago, they were so much fun! Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
ReplyDeleteLorrie
wow, that looks like great fun! My hubby and I have been talking about attending some auctions as I know you can find some great, unique things there!
ReplyDeleteHi Susan, I haven't attended an auction in years. I remember the fun of watching the people trying to out bid each other. With so many in our area loosing their homes we have quite a few in our area now. I know you had a blast.. hugs ~lynne~
ReplyDeleteI love the show and Paul Brown comes across as a really nice guy on camera. I think most things sell at a fair price too. Great post.
ReplyDeleteyes I have seen the show and enjoy watching it because the owner and the couple employees are always so pleasant. The auction I attend is the same way...tons of workers moving tables with items, furniture etc...have to watch where you are going or you will be run over!
ReplyDeleteHow COOL!! My hubby and I watch that show all the time...and it's so much fun! We love it! We live in Texas, but I know if we travel east one day, we'll be looking ahead and making plans to attend that auction. They have so much cool stuff! Well, did you get anything??? I bet it was so much fun!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you shared about it. Hope you go back!!
Blessings, Doni
GM My dear friend I watch this show all the time and always drool big time over all the chandy love..how fun to be apart of it..Please give Glenda my love..Hugs and smiles Gloria
ReplyDeleteI'm so jealous! We have a series recording set up in our DVR for Auction Kings! Love it! We were talking the other day about driving over to Atlanta and going to one of theirs. I LOVE auctions and go to them often!! So much fun!!! It's entertainment!
ReplyDeleteLou Cinda :)
Oh how fun - I've been watching the show on TV and I'm sure it would be a fun experience to be there in person.
ReplyDeleteI've seen that show! I love it.
ReplyDeleteHubby and I watch it all the time, Susan! Great show! I bet that was alot of fun! Great post!
ReplyDeleteSuch fun! I'll check out the show. Thanks for sharing your day. Cherry Kay
ReplyDeleteI watch that show and always think of you Hotlanta bloggers! I wondered if any of you had ever gone!
ReplyDeleteLooks like lots of fun. Love your pictures. They're so "alive." I attended my first auction about a month ago. The house behind me and all its contents were auctioned off. It was an all day affair. I was able to go for a while, come home and take a nap, then go back! I bid on, and got a small oak basket for $5.00!
ReplyDeleteBest,
Susan
I've never been to a huge auction like that before. That must've been so exciting. I always get a kick out of listening to the auctioneer talk so fast. Guess you need a jolt of caffeine before bidding so you can stay on your toes and not get outbid!
ReplyDeleteLove auctions. I used to go to a few in Cornwall UK. They can be fun, they can be dangerous. I once got carried away and bid much more than the thing was worth. Have a limit and stick to it. xx
ReplyDeleteHi, Susan. Thanks for the link-up to the fun how-to I did for you. This post definitely makes me want to head to an auction! We've watched the show on TV a few times, and it's a hoot! I can only imagine what it's like in person. Maybe someday we'll head your way and see for ourselves. Fun post!
ReplyDeleteI love auctions! I would go bankrupt if I lived in the Atlanta area loving antiques as I do. :/ With Oklahoma being a fairly new state, the luxury of finding lots of antiques isn't so great.
ReplyDeleteOne of my son's friends owns an auction business with his father and I've bought several items for my home from their auctions.
Fortunately, their auctions are quite small in comparison to Gallery 63 so the competition isn't that bad.
Yes I watch that on cable TV and would love to go see it in person. Thats what I mean about living in a larger city so much to do
ReplyDeleteI'm whinning about where I live again. I go into st Louis and Kansas City shopping since I am in the middle of the state
how fun for you to go to Gallery 63
thanks for showing that it was very interesting to me
Hi, when we lived in Florida I'd go to the Pt. St. Lucie auction, which is smaller than Atlanta's. If you think you may want to purchase something you have to sign in to get a number which allows you to bid. It's a lot of fun. I'm only 3 hours from Atlanta now and it's on my to do list. Your site is the greatest!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, thanks so much! You would enjoy the Gallery 63 auction...just arrive early to be able to get a seat. The seats were almost all filled an hour before the start of the auction.
ReplyDeleteThis a great live entertainment on a Sunday in Atlanta. Be sure to register for a number if you want to bid. Then you just hold up your number paddle if you want to jump in!
