Beautiful Lake House Kitchen Renovation: Welcome to the 135th Metamorphosis Monday!

Whew!  What a weekend.  It's been a painting marathon around here...but it's done.   How was your weekend?  Do anything fun or was it a weekend for working around the house?

Lake House Kitchen Renovation:
I'm exited to share a wonderful kitchen renovation for this Metamorphosis Monday.  Wendy, a reader of BNOTP, recently shared some pics of a kitchen renovation in her vacation lake home located on Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia.

When Wendy and her husband first bought their vacation home, they were planning on making a few modest changes in the kitchen.  But once they took a closer look at the kitchen cabinets, the counters, and the sink, the more they realized a full kitchen renovation was in order.

Wendy said, "Since we were trying to furnish a second home, we didn't plan on redoing the kitchen but I couldn't tolerate the mold in the grout and the general yuck of the sticky cabinets. We thought we'd paint the cabinet frames, and buy new doors and laminate counters as a low cost make-it-work-for-now alternative.

In obtaining estimates, we met with a local kitchen designer who said she could get us a whole new kitchen with granite for what we had budgeted. REALLY? Well, yeah, but once we went to her showroom, my husband fell in love with the better cabinets and before we knew it, we were getting THIS kitchen. I'm sure ultimately we saved money since we no longer were going to have to remodel twice. The "better" kitchen was maybe half again what we budgeted originally."

Wendy said, "The kitchen was old with laminate cabinets with oak finger pulls, and the tile countertops were probably a DIY project with ceramic tile applied to the original laminate countertops."

Here's a shot of that tile Wendy was talking about.  Definitely time for a change...goodbye moldy tile.

In this photo, some of the cabinets have been removed, along with the vent hood above the stove.  Demo has started on the island, as well.

Wendy and her hubby were relieved to find the flooring underneath the old island was still in good shape.

There goes the old counter...out the door in one whole piece.

A clean slate...time to get down to business!

In the photo below, the cabinets have been installed.  They are Summit by Showplace Cabinetry in a maple stain called "Cashmere" with a caramel glazing.

Wendy said, "My original plan was to have a white ceiling (it is a cedar ceiling and was already painted) and blue walls until I was looking at my Southern Living magazine featuring someone's porch with walls painted linen and the ceiling painted aqua."

That sounds like the "haint" blue ceilings I've posted about HERE and HERE that you sometimes see on front porches in the south.

Wendy added, "I stole that idea without remorse."  Wendy, here in Blogland we steal great decorating ideas right and left without remorse.  ;)

Let's take a look at the AFTER!

Love the blue ceiling...perfect for a vacation home or lake house!  It would be great for a beach house, too.

Wendy said, "Microwave is new but the other appliances came with the house.  I like the black and the accent tiles pull it all together."

Notice the "breakfast bar" Wendy created there under the microwave.

Wendy told me she got the idea for a breakfast bar from a previous post she read that was linked here on a past Met Monday.  Love that...totally what Met Monday is all about!

To create this breakfast bar, Wendy outfitted it with a toaster and coffee maker. The cabinets above hold coffee cups, cereal bowls, and small plates. Brilliant!

Regarding the island, Wendy said,  "The original island had a bar sink, but I didn't want it.  I wanted more counter space so we did away with the sink."  Wendy also extended the granite top out to create a great breakfast bar.

The glass panels in the end cabinet are made in the "water glass" style.

"Granite color is Caledonia.  Faucet is Arabella by Delta."

The color of the backsplash tile is "mushroom."   The accent tile is a mix of stone, glass and stainless steel.  It is from the Opulence series by Glazzio Tiles and the color is "Hidden Valley."

About this fun cookie jar, Wendy said, "This funky little fish cookie jar was left behind by the previous owners. I couldn't decide whether it was the ugliest thing ever or kinda cute in that funky way (matching salt and pepper shakers are on the little shelf by the window over the sink). My daughter advised me to hang onto it for awhile because I could always donate it to Goodwill later. But it turned out to be the color inspiration for the whole room."

New pulls finish out the beautiful cabinetry.  Hardware is by Amarock.

Kitchen light is from the Haverhill line by Hudson Valley Lighting.
