Winter Tablescape! Welcome to the 73rd Tablescape Thursday!

It's been unusually cold here in Georgia this winter...we even had a bit of snow.

Winter Christmas Snowman Table Setting

Snow in Georgia calls for a tablescape with a wintery feel.

When I spied these snowman plates at HomeGoods a few months back, I couldn't resist.

Winter Christmas Snowman Table Setting

When I had family here for Christmas, we used them for dessert; today they are salad plates in our whimsical, winter tablescape.

I'm using the Dollar Tree snowflake glasses I told BNOTP Facebook Fans about several weeks ago. I've received several comments and e-mails from folks saying they bought them after I posted about them on the BNOTP FB Wall. Some of the Dollar Tree stores do still have them...I saw some in the store when I stopped by today. (If you'd like to follow BNOTP on Facebook, just click on the "Fan" button posted on the sidebar.)

I didn't have any "snowy" flatware, but I kind of like the way this silverplate in a Beethoven pattern, looks with this tablesetting. It has been well used and has developed that "icy" patina I so love to see on silver.

Winter Christmas Snowman Table Setting

Before I could put this tablescape together last week, I had to get busy and take down all my Christmas decorations. I got a little help from my snowmen friends. Charlie took all the lights off the trees...

Raphie took the trees back down to the basement...

I love these snowflake tealight candle holders. They are available HERE at Colonial Candle.

Fred discovered an unopened package and tried to sneak off with it...

And Harry...well, Harry goofed off, went sledding, and didn't help at all! ;-)

The nandinas are still putting on a grand show in my backyard. The foliage and berries made for a great centerpiece, tucked down inside a pitcher in the snowman pattern. I liked how they mimicked the red berries on the snowman salad plates. :-)

I wanted to take a few pics by candlelight, but since it wasn't dark, I decided to create my own "dark" by closing the shutters in the breakfast room. As I was closing the shutters, I glanced out and saw this big boy sitting in the tree. Do you see him? He's in the center, down in the lower third of the pic, sitting on a limb. He's just to the left of the skinny tree in the center, down toward the bottom of the pic. He's HUGE!

I went outside and tried to get a better picture of him, but he flew down to the ground, made a lot of noise thrashing around in the leaves...then he flew off. I'm thinking he may have caught something.

Does anyone recognize what kind of bird this might be...perhaps by the shape of his body and tail? I can tell you he was REALLLLLLY BIG...probably 1 1/2 to 2 feet tall. He looked gigantic sitting out there on that limb. I've seen him around here before. When he comes around, all the other birds go nuts and start screeching in the trees. That's the way they warn each other and try to scare him off. I would love to know what it is...perhaps a hawk or falcon? He could definitely carry off a small cat or dog...this bird is HUGE! If you know someone who knows birds, please send them to look at this pic. (Click on pic to enlarge even more.)

UPDATE: Mary, Jilly, Delores and Pat think this guy is a Red-tail Hawk (also known as a Chicken-hawk) and I think they are right. I just looked him up on Wikipedia and I do think that's what he is because he has the speckles down his front like the red-tailed hawk. And Wikipedia says they can grow to be 18 to 26 inches tall! I told y'all he was HUGE! (LOL)

Here's a pic of this handsome guy from Wikipedia:

Update: This guy may have come back for another visit. Check out THIS post and let me know what you think. Think it's the same guy? If so, he seems to stop by each January. :)

Ok, back to our tablescape...got the shutters all closed, so time for a bit of candlelight.
Winter Christmas Snowman Table Setting

Thanks so much for stopping by this evening. See that porch out there through the French door? In about 8 weeks, we'll be back out there tablescaping...and this girl can't wait! :-) Looking forward to seeing your beautiful tablescapes!

Hiya susan!

Lovely table and the Nandina just makes everything look so pretty!

Can't tell what your bird visitor might be from such a distance, but do you have hawks in your area? How big was he really???? LOL Sounds like a fisherman's story about the big one that got away. :-)

Hi Susan,
I always love visiting your blog on a Thursday and I hope this new year will be a fantastic year for you.

I wonder what sort of bird it was, could it have been an owl maybe. I just love birds, we are so lucky to be near a bush area surrounded by them.

This week I have posted a very special lunch with blogger Minna from Blomsterverkstad in Sweden. She is adorable and we had her and all her family for lunch at our home here in Australia on Sunday.

One day hopefully we tablescapers can all get together and meet. How wonderful would that be?

♥ those $store snowflake glasses!!!

I'm sorry I can't help you with identifying the bird. I even enlarged the photo. It kind of looks like an owl but I'm not really sure.

I hope we ALL warm up very soon! I am soooo ready for Spring.

Hi Susan,

I have followed your blog for about a year and always enjoy it. I have never left a comment, but your bird pic encouraged me to do so. I am also a bird lover. I enlarged the pic and I am pretty sure you had a vistor from a red tailed hawk. They are migratory through the south at this time of year. I live in Texas and have been watching a red tailed hawk in my backyard for the past couple of weeks. I have witnessed him grab two squirrels from trees!!

Any how, thanks for your great blog. Your home is absolutley beautiful. I love that you have kept your pretty brass hardware. I have kept most of mine also. I feel it is actually very traditional. Afterall, you see it everywhere in Williamsburg!

So cute and colorful! You've carried out your theme beautifully in this one (well, as you always do!). The nandina foliage and berries provide the most perfect centerpiece anyone could imagine for this table. It's one of the happiest tables I've ever seen, and you KNOW I love that wonderful vintage flatware.

Thank you for hosting once again. I can never thank you enough for all that you do. You bring so much joy into all our lives.

Warmest regards,
Bill

Hi Susan! What a cute and cheerful tablescape for our cold, dreary weather! I can't wait for our heatwave of temps in the 50's! lol The nandina makes a perfect centerpiece, too! We used to have an owl in our backyard that I had to keep an eye on when my cats and I were out for a little stretch. Those guys are fearless!!! I hope you are having a great week! Stay warm!...hugs...Debbie

Hi Susan.....first great table as usual....very "cold" looking....Like I need that this week...I've been freezing since coming back from Jersey....and now for the Big Bird....didn't you ever read my post....
"The Giant Buzzards of Cobb County".....
I had the same bird in my yard...at first I thought it was a giant wild turkey....after I got laughed out of the neighborhood my neighbor who is Marietta born and raised came out of the house and being very disgusted with me not being in the know of Southern Wildlife said "it's just a Buzzard"....So I'll assume since your bird looks just like mine it's a Cobb County Buzzard.....
I'll send her by to confirm....

Hi Susan,
This is such a cute tablescape. As I was finishing the dinner dishes tonight, I couldn't hardly wait to get upstairs to see what you had posted!! What a treat-

As for the bird, I am no bird expert but I too think it is a hawk. We have quite a few hawks out here in Arizona.

Beautiful tablescape as always, and such a gracious hostess. Always enjoy looking at what you and your readers are doing.

As we have many of them here (yes, even in San Diego) I agree wholeheartly with Mary...you saw a red tail hawk. They are big, loud, and beautiful to watch flying. An owls face would have been easy to recognize in your photo. Hope you get the chance to see him again, hopefully flying. If he's coming down fast, he's after something.

Blessings,
Jilly

I'm wondering how well the silverplated flatware holds up over time?? My sterling is over 100 years old and looks great, but my mom had gotten some beautiful SP for her 1961 wedding and I'm curious if it's worth adding to as she only had four place settings. Is it good for everyday?

Susan, I just don't know how you do it time and time again!!! You are brilliant and the little snowmen and your captions are the best!

Just a funny story, well not so funny at the time, but my dog was almost picked up by a giant hawk when we lived in Germany! It was easily two and a half feet tall! My neighbor and I were walking our dogs through some fields and we saw this giant bird in a tree. We didn't think much about it as we were there, my dog was about 24 lbs. and her dog was a big lab. Next thing we know, this monster comes off that tree and swoops right over my dog's back!!! I started running, screaming and waving my umbrella like a mad woman! It flew back to the tree and then I will be darned if it didn't try it again! I put Murphy on the leash then and kept her by my side until we got home. It was the craziest thing and we never saw it again!

Watch your pets!

Kathryn

My friend had a pair of hawks nesting in a tree in her yard after the lot behind her was cleared for building. I guess they were so upset to lose their home they acted a little crazy. They snapped all the stems and blooms off her wax wing begonias that were in pots on her porch. For a day or two she could not understand what happened to her begonias then looked out to see a hawk roosting on her porch railing. She turned on the porch fans and left a radio playing for a few days. Months later when she had nursed her begonias back to their beautiful lush appearance with pretty blooms she went out of town on a cruise and they did the same thing. She found out they are on the endangered list so if she goes out of town she now has to move her begonias.

Such a cute table Susan! The hawk could be a red tail, and probably is, or a GINORMOUS Cooper's Hawk, both are opportunistic hunters in yards with bird feeders...we have a Cooper's that goes after our slower Mourning Doves. Kind of sad, really, but hawks gotta eat too! Just wish they wouldn't do it on my backyard! Love your blog!!!

I don't think it has to be Christmas to have such a beautiful and fun table with snowmen! If it is winter, bring on the fun snowmen! Your tablescape is absolutely beautiful, adorable and so inviting! YES this bird is definitely a hawk. They are all over here in southern Utah. I see them on poles everywhere. They are so big and beautiful and amazing to me. Look at his speckled feathers and awesome talons. I think that this bird of prey is so beautiful. If you can capture him again please do so! He is perched because there is probably little rodents around for a tasty meal! You may find this site very fun to read http://www.mdia.org/redtailhk.htm well enough about the hawk...sorry I just wish I was at your window to see this beautiful bird!

Oh my word - that is the sweetest tablescape! Your nandina are gorgeous and so full of berries. I've always wanted one and that may just inspire me to get on it this spring.

We have hawks in our neighborhood. They are fascinating to watch. I'm always nervous they are going to take off with my neighbor's Pomeranian one day - oh my.

Hi Susan,
I'd say that the bird is a Red Tail Hawk. I live in central CA and every year around Thanksgiving the Red Tail Hawk comes to the pine trees across the street from our rural home. I know the moment they arrive b/c the crows go crazy. They usually stay around until Jan or Feb then they're gone. It's an event that marks my holiday season. I love their return.

Hi Kathryn,
Wow...poor Murphy...glad you saved him! I've heard they will carry off small dogs...that was an ambitious bird...going for a 24lb doggie! And to try it twice!!!
About the nandina...they are EXTREMELY hardy...you can't kill 'em. When I had the decks and porches built, the builder was going to put the steps going down on one side...and before I could do it, his workmen dug up the Nandina that was in the way. It lay on the ground for several days with little dirt around the roots. Then we changed our minds about the stair location, so I replanted it. Never watered it and it did great! I use a lot of the berries on my two bushes at Christmas for decorating and it always puts out plenty more by next Christmas. Nandina Domestica...the one that produces berries, is known for eventually getting a bit on the leggy side...so it isn't the prettiest bush to have on the front of a home. When it gets leggy (lots of woody stem showing) you go in and trim out a stem or two or three at the base of the plant and it will send up new shoots that fill in to hide the woody part...or at least that's my understanding. Apparently trimming them across the top doesn't make them fill out below like on a normal bush. I LOVE them because they produce gorgeous berries that look beautiful for months and months, even after they dry out...and they don't have thorns. :-) Oh, there are other types of Nandina...like Nandina Firepower and Nandina Purpurea, but those don't have berries...just beautiful foilage at certain times of the year.
Hope that helps,
Susan

Happy Birthday Susan!!!!

I hope you had a wonderful day. I just love your darling snowman dishes. I could not have resisted them if I had seen them in Home Goods. I loved the little red bird on the plates. The design just made me want to smile looking at all of those cute little happy faces. I thought the mention of Charlie and Harry was adorable. You have a wonderful gift with story telling.

Your tablescape was BEAUTIFUL and your pics were great.

That was a huge bird!!!!

Hugs,
Katherine S.

Hi Susan!

What a beautiful table! I really love your blog and look forward to seeing your beautiful pictures each day. I linked to Tablescape Thursday on Thursday, but tonight I couldn't find my name, so I tried again. (hope i didn't do anything wrong?)

I also have a visiting hawk! Mine is very large as well. He must like it here because he's been around for months!!

God Bless.

Susan, I enjoy your blog so much, it never disappoints me. You have such a creative touch and a real knack for writing. You not only entertain us with your beautiful tablescapes but with your fascinating writing and your imagination about the snowman friends helping you put away the decorations was spectacular. What a gift for story telling you have! You made it seem so real. You could write children's books easily. Wonder what a market there is in children's books? Do you think parents spend a lot of money for kid's books vs their own adult books. Just a thought that went through my mind. I wonder!
