A Blue and White Pumpkin for the Guest Room

There were so many wonderful tablescapes posted for yesterday's Tablescape Thursday!  I got a kick out of all the Halloween table settings--so whimsical and fun!

A couple of weeks ago I posted about these wonderful découpaged pumpkins I found in the October issue of Country Living.

That post (HERE) also contained a little tutorial showing how you could découpage a "craft" pumpkin.

You may remember the pattern I chose for my pumpkin was the floral fabric on this cute pillow.

Here's how it looked when finished.  I had so much fun with this one, I really wanted to découpage at least one more pumpkin before Halloween was all gone for another year.

I chose a fabric pattern from the guest room this time.

Can you guess which one?

I am slightly obsessed with blue and white.  It's just such a crisp, sharp combination.  I love the book, A Passion for Blue and White by Carolyne Roehm.   Do you love blue and white decor, too?  It seems to be a color combination that never goes out of style--a classic color scheme.

For my pumpkin this time, I decided on this Ralph Lauren fabric pattern called, Porcelain.  It's the fabric found in the pillow shams on the guest bed.

I drove back over to the same Office Depot and ran off some copies of one of the shams.  Again, I only used around 6-8 sheets.

Next, I painted the orange craft pumpkin, white.  I didn't want to take any chances on that bright orange showing through the white sections of the paper.  It took two coats of white acrylic paint to cover it fairly well.  I used the same white paint I previously used when I made/painted a patriotic flag for the porch, HERE.

The lighting in the guest room is always a bit tough for photographs since it's on the north side of the house.

So, I took Mrs. Pumpkin out on the porch for a few natural-light photos.  You can really see the true colors out here on the porch.

I really love how it turned out.  The central design that appears several times on the shams is visible in this photo.  It depicts two exotic-looking birdies up in a tree.  I put that pattern on the front and back side of my pumpkin.

Then I just filled in the rest of the pumpkin with the other parts of the design.  This pumpkin definitely took longer than the one I posted about before.  It was tricky matching up this intricate pattern--kind of like putting together one of those puzzles where all the pieces look the same.

You'll find the previous post showing how to découpage a craft pumpkin, HERE.  It's really easy.  Just don't rush--take your time.

I'd still love to découpage something with the graphics from the Pictorial Webster we saw in the Country Living magazine.  I don't think I want it to be a pumpkin, though.  Ummm, I'll think of something.

Have you découpaged any pumpkins this year?  If so, please share a pic on the BNOTP Facebook page HERE.  I'd love to see them!

  1. Hi Susan! I've missed you as I've been gone on a trip for quite some time. Oh, I love your decoupaged pumpkins! Both of them. I love the blue and white one as it reminds me of the dish pattern Blue Willow. Your guest room has always been one of my favorites! :)
    Hope your doing well.
    Be a sweetie,

  4. You did a fabulous job on this one, too, Susan! Funnily enough, I just posted about how horrible I think mine came out. I think I used pumpkins that were too small and had too deep of an indentation. That dictionary is wonderful! I have one myself. I'd love to see what you come up with for it.

  12. I have two porcelin blue and white lamps with that exact pattern just sitting in my garage! If you lived close I'd just give them to you. My mom got them in Hong Kong...they're really nice but I don't have a spot for them.

  13. Both of your decoupaged pumpkins are SWEET! The great thing is that they could be left out till Thanksgiving-unless you're itching to start Christmas decorating! :)
The blue and white is GORGEOUS.Thanks for showing how you do it!

  15. I don't think there's a way to attach a photo to your Facebook link. At least not one that I could figure out. Here's the blog address for a photo of my pumpkin. I used fall napkins leftover from last year to decopage my pumpkin. I like the way it turned out, wrinkles (texture!) and all.

Country Living magazine hit a home run with this project.

  16. I love blue and white combinations and have several plates and cobalt blue items. My favorite colors. This would be a great addition to my collection. I use red as an accent color and thinking of covering my small pumpkins in blue and white, also red toile fabric, along with red gingham. A country collage of pumpkins...inspired by you of course! I might do it for Christmas decor instead since it's so close and I need time. Great work!

  18. So pretty, Susan! I have one to do but haven't done it yet. I am planning on keeping it up through Thanksgiving though so I am not as late as I seem. :) I have that Pictoral Webster's but I don't know if that is what I am doing or not. I do love your idea of photocopying fabric. I saved my pumpkin stems from last year. I am planning on cutting off the stem of the faux pumpkin and gluing on a real one. Thanks for your inspiration!

  21. Your blue and white pumpkin is tooooo cute! I love your idea of photocopying fabric. I'll have to remember this for next year because I've got to get started on a few Christmas projects that I have in mind.

  22. I'm obsessed with blue and white right now too. I just repainted my dining room walls blue and the crown molding is glossy white, it really looks good, looking forward to Christmas when I can decorate....thinking all silver in there!

  26. How delightful! Crafty people are ahead of the game for decorating. Not only would I never think of doing something like this, but if I tried to do it, I can pretty be sure it would end up all kattiwampus and look more like a big ball of wrapping paper heading for the trash! Guaranteed!

  27. Oh my goodness...I love them both! The blue one is really amazing. You did a fabulous job with these!!

  28. I love Blue and white too. I haven't made any pumpkins this year but maybe next year. I really enjoyed seeing yours.

  29. Just love your blue and white pumpkin!!! I also love that color combination and have a beautiful set of blue and white Currier and Ives dishes. They are my favorite. I just posted a picture of my first pumpkin on your Facebook page. It was so much fun to do that I went out yesterday and bought another one. I actually used a decorative pumpkin I found at Walmart. They are only $4.95 and it worked perfectly! Thank you, so much, for the wonderful tutorial. I want to fill the house with them!!!

  30. Susan, would you believe that your bedroom RL blue & white are the exact same pattern that I had in my former home that we sold before moving to FL? The buyers asked that the bedspread & shams remain, as they matched the drapes. Grrrrr! I hated to let that set go, but we wanted out of the ice & snow so badly, we agreed to all their demands.
Now we're right back in it. LOL

Your pumpkins are absolutely darling! I'm tempted to try one. Thanks for showing us how.

    fondly,
    Rett

  35. What a wonderful idea! These look amazing - I don't think I would have gravitated toward this idea without seeing the pix, but they really are wonderful decorative elements!

I"m impressed by your ingenuity (photocopying shams?!) and good work. Thanks for the ideas!

I've been working on blue and white Thanksgiving tablescapes for my job at Saffron Marigold, and now I'm thinking about how a decoupage pumpkin could be incorporated. :)

  36. I was just reading that magazine today and wala - I saw gorgeous examples of it done by you - AWESOME!

My room is done in the Ralph Lauren porcelain too and so I have a special affinity for the gorgeous blue pumpkin. Nice job! Happy Halloween!
