A Kitty Cat Rail for the Porch

While we continue enjoying all the fabulous "Before and Afters" linked for yesterday's Met Monday, I wanted to share a little addition you may want to consider adding or building into a screened-in porch if you have kitties living in your household.

Recently I received an e-mail from Marcy who shared a fun feature she and her husband added to their porch: a kitty cat rail.

Marcy told me, "The post about your friend adding a screened porch interested me, because we just did that a couple of years ago. It was one of the best things we have ever done to our home. We practically live out there in the spring, summer and fall."

Marcy forwarded along these photos. She said, "The one "unusual" thing we did was add a "kitty cat rail" around three sides. Our three cats come out to the porch with us and cannot go outside, so we put in the "cat walk" and they just love it."

"They eat on it, walk on it, sleep on it. So, if you know any other cat lovers, you may suggest this to them." Marcy, I love this idea! Thanks so much for sharing it! I'm sure there will be folks adding this idea to their own porch.

Love this! My cat would love to have a kitty rail for her to keep an eye on the squirrel action in the backyard. I love the pattern below the kitty rail, too. They did a lovely job with their screened porch. Thanks for sharing.

How fun for the kitties! We're working on plans now to add a little separate kitty sun porch that's attached to a window. I'm going to blog it and hope it doesn't make us look crazy! What we do for our pets! JenT

That cat rail is such a good idea! My cat loves watching through the window and I had to remove any item from the window sill, just for him!

Hi Susan....What a great idea the cat walk is! We are hoping to screen in a cat porch but it all depends on you-know-what...$$$$$$$. Hope springs eternal. Have a super day. Susan

That's a great idea, Susan! But my staff would claw up the screen! :-( I can't even leave windows open in my house for that reason. Hope you are having a good week!...hugs...Debbie

We have had two screened porches and each one had a cat rail. We have 4 cats and when we moved into this home over 7 years ago we screened in a patio and asked the men to add a perch for the cats to sleep on. They love it and watch the birds and nap. We even added a cat door to the porch off the kitchen so they have free access. Best thing ever for indoor only kitties. Highly recommend it!!

I think it may also stop the cats from just climbing right up the screens and ruining them. Cats are so funny I can just imagine them wandering back and forth along there.

Ooooh. We just happen to HAVE a "princess kitty" whose domain just happens to BE our screened porch. She would LOVE a "catwalk"!
It might even discourage her from sleeping in the water fountain. Lol!

Using hardware cloth on the inside of the regular screening will deter and prevent cats from destroying the screen. Love the catwalk and will definitely include one in the porch of my planned "forever cottage."

Susan, thank you so much for featuring my catwalk! We truly do love it and I would think other kitty lovers may think it is a great idea. I am infatuated with that old home being renovated and can hardly wait to see it completed!!! How fun.

I would love to screen in our patio. We have thinking about it for years. This is an awesome one. I would spend my entire summer out there. Very cool kitty walk.
