A Paint Panic Attack

Does this ever happen to you? You finally decide on a paint color, go to the paint store, buy the paint, come home, start painting and then, PANIC! It happens to me every. single. time. When the paint first goes up, it never, ever looks right. As I began painting on Friday, I kept reminding myself of this as I painted and panicked.

After much deliberation and brainstorming of all the possible colors in the rainbow I could paint the walls of my home office, I settled on a color that's been my favorite since I first came across it in the home of a friend 15 years ago: Duron, Sugar Cookie.

Here's how it looked when I began cutting it in. Awful, isn't it? As I was painting, I alternated between thinking the guy at Home Depot who mixed it must have really goofed, and reminding myself that each time I paint, I always think it looks terrible and too dark in the beginning. Even Max appears to be saying, "WHAT is this woman thinking?"

Below is how Sugar Cookie is supposed to look. Does the pic above look anything like the entry below? Scary.

Or, like this bedroom? Nope.

Yep, panic time. Just look at how dark it looks against the white primer. Yikes!

Once the "cutting in" part was done and I began rolling on the paint, I began to feel a little better.

I applied a second coat of paint this morning and here's how it looked late this afternoon after it was completely dry. Much, much better.

I have a long, sordid history with yellow paint. Twenty years ago when we bought this house, we had been "trying out houses" for quite a while. That was the term our son who was seven at the time, dubbed our weekend house-hunting excursions. During the "trying out" phase, we decided when we finally settled into a new home, we would paint the walls a soft yellow.

After buying this house and moving in, we could never find the right shade of yellow. All the samples we brought home looked limey once they were tested on the wall. We ended up settling on a really soft shade of pink for the walls. I know that sounds weird but it was very subtle and looked really pretty.

Several years later I met a friend who was married to a man who was a professional football coach. They tended to move a good bit with his career and she never knew when they might have to move again. She had discovered over the years that Sugar Cookie worked in any house and always went well with the fabrics/colors she always chose to decorate with each time they moved.

Our decorating styles were very similar. When I entered her home, it was love at first sight. I loved the color of her walls so I knew I had finally found my yellow paint. She told me Sugar Cookie would work with any fabric color (red, green, blue etc) and it looked great with antiques, new furniture, painted furniture...really anything. Over the years I have definitely found this to be true.

So, the walls are finally painted. Now I'm just waiting to hear if I will be getting the chandelier I found on eBay or if the original buyer will still be getting it. It's a long story...one I'll share soon.   Update:  You'll find the post about the chandelier I hoped to get, HERE.

Once I have a light fixture, I will have it and the crown molding installed. The same person will be installing both so I need to wait until I have the fixture.

Remember when the walls looked like this?

And this? I learned a new skill creating this home office...the art of repairing walls damaged by wallpaper removal. Wallboard joint compound is good stuff...messy, but good.

Here's the paint formula in case you're interested in having some mixed up. The Home Depot guy printed this out for me so I'd always have the actual formula. He said all they need in order to mix it is this bar code. So I guess you could just print out this picture and take it to any Home Depot. Oh, for some crazy reason, in their computer it is listed as Duron, Sugar Cook. So he looked it up on their little paint fan-deck thingy to verify that Sugar Cook is really Sugar Cookie.

We've come a long way. Next up...painting the trim and the closet. I'm so ready to get the furniture back against the wall and back in position as it really goes. We're getting closer, finally getting closer now.

Take a tour of the office from start to "almost" finished, HERE.  It still need drapes/curtains and a lamp or two, but it's mostly complete.

So grateful for the tip on yellow paint. I'm not a Duron fan but I'll go to HD and get Sugar Cookie based on your recommendation. I have a lovely porch that I just couldn't seem to make "work" until my "duh" moment...the whole bloody thing was boring brown! Ugh. I'm going with this yellow and crisp white trim. Thanks again for an excellent blog.

I am a huge fan of yellow and have used it in most of the rooms of my home. I decided to switch things up a bit few years back when we remodeled and picked a beige color that has yellow undertones. Something about that yellow that = smile. Your room is looking lovely.

Susan, I feel your pain. Several years ago I remember rolling on the first coat of Martha Stewart yellow paint ( I can't remember the name of it) in a guest room closet and calling my girl friend to tell her the color was awful and I'd use the gallon for a primer and go back and try another yellow. Well after two coats on the whole room I decided I liked it after all. It's still there.

I can't wait to see the room finished I'm in love with your PB office already.

Isn't it funny when that happens? Then when you did the rest of the wall, it didn't look as dark. I guess it is seeing it against the white primer. It looks like a great color, too, Susan!

Love Sugar Cookies....oh, and the paint too! I've been thinking of using creamy yellow as a neutral in my basement sewing room just to make it brighter! Love it! I've always loved yellow but years ago I read that if you prefer yellow, you are a "nervous" person. So, I steered away from it...now I know better! Poppycock!

Susan, your office looks fabulous and the yellow walls are beautiful. I had my share of nightmares when I was trying to paint a guest room a pale yellow. OMG, I don't know how many samples I tried until finally the guy at BM store took pity on me and recommended a color called Rich Creme, which is a very pale yellow. I could tell by his expression when he recommended it to me he had a lot of experience with people having trouble finding that perfect yellow. I now have that color in the great room, hall, laundry and pantry and somtimes wish I had put it throughout the house, but then I might have become bored with the same color in all the rooms. It's a wonderfully soothing color like your Sugar Cookie color.

Duron Sugar Cookie is one of my all time favorites as well! I used it as a base coat for several faux finish wall in the 90s, a cabinet a few years ago and have been thinking of using it for my master bath redo.

Your office is looking so much better now that the walls are painted. Your patience and planning are paying off and are an inspiration to me!!!

Hello Susan,
yes, I know this panic attacs very well when painting a room. But in the end your room looks perfect. When I am painting, the wet color always looks very different to the dry one. And eaven when the colors turs out the very same, the look can be different. The illumination can change the look as much as the reflection from the other walls. So it makes a big difference to have a small or a big room in that color. And at the end the floor and the furniture influences the perception.
But I am sure, because your kittycat was watching every step, there could not happen a desaster. :-)

Best greetings, Johanna

Wow, nice transformation!

And, yes, I was with Max - wondering if I would have even continued after cutting in. So many times I've tried paint only to find it either wasn't bold enough. Or, I had gone too dark. (My "strawberry ice cream" bedroom years ago - when I was shooting for "a light hint of pink blush" is an excellent example.

Now, I grab 2 or 9 paint chip samples FOE EACH COLOR I'm considering, cut them up, tape them together on the back, and hang them in the room. Then one by one I pull them off during different times of day - if I hate them. "This one looks like mud during the day - that would drive me batty on the weekends" - into the trash it goes.

When I'm left with a paint color I love - I buy it. And, I have a new rule for myself. NEVER just buy a color in the store. I NEED to go through the above process. Otherwise, I'll end up re-painting my kitchen like I did recently (thank you to my husband for encouraging my to re-paint it when I could tell I wasn't happy.) Or, I'll end up living with a "Strawberry Ice Cream" bedroom - like I did for...10 years. Ack!

I've had a similar sordid history with yellow. I wanted my kitchen to be that primitive gold color and when I thought I found the color swatch that would bring me that color, I painted my entire 25 X 12 kitchen in this horrid mango gold. I was so disappointed and people would be horrified that my kitchen was so bright and bold, but I just sucked it up and kept it (never sharing how much I hated it as well!!!). Last year I finally went back to the paint store--explained my issues to the designer and she picked colors for me....not in the yellow, but more neutral family. Now when walking into my kitchen, everyone raves about the color scheme....and I'm pleased that it's so neutral that even I can be happy with it. I do like your Sugar Cookie color, though--wish I had this post to go by 5 years ago!!! ;-)

I am going through the paint angst (I have been to the paint store 10 times over the past week) - so I know how you feel! I am selecting colors for the brick and trim on the exterior of my house, and it is so important to get it right. It is amazing how differently a color dries from the first application!

Sugar cookie looks wonderful in your room. Thanks for giving us a behind the scenes look at the process!

Love this color, your office is really coming along. I love the soft yellow with the white trim. I hate that first jolt when you apply a new paint color, because it never looks right. Just redid Cait's old room, and I found the perfect blue. When I changed to fluorescent light bulbs in an attempt to be more earth conscious, the walls turned lavender! Yikes! So back to old fashioned bulbs for that room, I'll just recycle more LOL Kat

Love the color! You're right yellow can be scary. I pored over swatches and picked the perfect creamy buttery yellow to paint my kitchen walls, had it mixed up, and began painting. The walls were screamingly bright eye-bleed yellow. I thought maybe it was just the contrast with the primer, so I continued to paint. 3 walls later, and my retinas were close to detaching. Not good. I went back to the paint counter, and asked the guy for help. He gave me the perfect creamy, buttery yellow. So much better. Looks like yours was a home run the first time. Thanks for sharing.

I'm getting ready to scrape the popcorn texture off the rest of the ceilings in my house, and then repaint at least half the house. I like my yellow walls, but I was intrigued by your yellow. So after reading this, I went straight to Home Depot to see the swatch in the Duron paint fan thingie. But they didn't have it indexed under "Sugar Cookie" or "Sugar Cook". Do you by chance know which Duron paint fan they looked in? Each fan has a different name.
(I was at the Marietta HD on Shallowford and Sandy Plains.)

AD,
Email me at betweennapsontheporch@gmail.com and I'll give you all the info on where I bought my paint. I tried hitting reply but I don't think you have an email associated with your blog since it didn't pop up.

Just beautiful. I have a friend that painted a little, outdated lake cottage in Sugar Cookie years ago. It was just perfect to brighten it up. Good to see that it's still around in case I ever get back to my yellow phase!
