Yellow Cottages and White Picket Fences

So many amazing Before and Afters have been posted for yesterday's Met Monday! Be sure to scroll on down and check them out once you finish reading today's post. You are going to be amazed at all the talent and creativity!

Yellow Cottages and White Picket Fences:

I've always had a weakness for yellow houses.  When we built our first home in Jacksonville, AL, we chose a soft (exterior) yellow color by Benjamin Moore called "English Ivory."   Looking at this pic below, if I were building this home today it would have 3 or 5 dormer windows across the front.  Wouldn't that be perfect?  Wish we had thought of that at the time, but I guess it's a good thing we didn't.  We were young (23 and 26) and had already upgraded so many features, we really didn't have it in the budget to add anything else to the design.

We did include a screened in porch...you can just barely see it there on the back of the house.  I've had a warm spot in my heart for screened-in porches as long as I can remember.   This house also had a large deck on the back.  I'll have to dig out some of my old pics (interior and exterior) and share more about our first little house some day.

I just realized, you can see the mountains in the background in this pic.  The Jacksonville, Anniston, Oxford area is down in a valley and surrounded by mountains.  It's a beautiful area.  We lived in this house for 4 years while my husband was stationed at Ft. McClellan as a JAG officer.   This is the house we were living in when our son was born.  After that tour, we moved back to our home state of Georgia.  Speaking of our servicemen, Lana, whose husband, Tom, just deployed to  Afghanistan, has written a beautiful tribute for those who serve our country, HERE.

This was the home we bought when we moved back to Georgia.  It had just been built so we were the first owners of this home. The builder had painted it white with bluish/gray shutters and door.  It was a two-color paint scheme and was pretty boring.  When it needed painting after about 6 years, we painted it yellow, too.  We went with Benjamin Moore, English Ivory once again.  The shutters and door were painted a dark green called Essex Green, another Benjamin Moore Color.  And the trim was painted white...don't remember the exact color of white, now.  This house would have looked cute with a red door.  I hadn't discovered red doors, yet.

We lived here seven years and then moved to the home you see on the BNOTP blog today.  That's Chip in this pic below.  He was probably around 6 or 7 years old.  Miss my little boy.  He grew up, went off to college and moved out.  Still not sure how that happened. ;)

I've always loved yellow houses.  Even today I'd be totally happy in an adorable, storybook, yellow cottage with a white picket fence, a large butler's pantry, a pretty garden filled with foxgloves and a big screened-in porch.  Oh, and a cat or two in the garden would be nice, too.  ;) Yep, that's my idea of the perfect house.

About a year ago, Emily, (talented designer of Emily White Designs) and I started scheming on a design for a new banner here at Between Naps on the Porch.  I asked Emily to include a house in the banner since BNOTP is about decorating and all things house and home.  She e-mailed over several little houses she found online at iStock.  One was yellow with a white picket fence.  It was love at first sight.

As we began planning the banner, I came up with this crazy idea of changing it for the seasons and holidays.  Emily is so creative and patient.  She and I have had so much fun planning and conspiring to create the banners you see throughout the course of the year.

This was the first banner Emily created for BNOTP.

This year we revised it a bit by adding a big pile of leaves and a basket to the field.  We also added a rake leaning against the tree on the right.

Once Halloween and Thanksgiving have passed and fall makes way for winter, it's time to break out the snowy Winter banner.  Love the red cardinal in the "O" of the word, On.    Do you see the kitty in the window?  We tried to include him in every banner.

The weekend after Thanksgiving, it's time to decorate for Christmas.  I love the little touch of holly Emily included on the "O" in Porch.

Emily even made a Chrismas banner with flashing lights. :)  I can't enlarge it for this post, but it is as large as the others when it's actually in place across the top.

Once Spring arrives, this is the banner that goes up and stays up all throughout the spring and summer.  Notice the cute little bird inside the "O" in On.

When a patriotic holiday rolls around...it's time to bring out the Red, White and Blue.  Even Mr. Birdie's house gets a flag.

New Banner for Halloween:
About two weeks ago, Emily created a new banner just for Halloween. It will be going up this afternoon, so if you have a minute stop back by later today and check it out.  I think it will put a smile on your face. :)

Update:  Here's the Halloween banner.  Did you notice the bat coming out of the O in the word on...and the owl in the tree.  Love those fun details.

  2. Thanks for sharing your story about your love of yellow homes. I have always been drawn to yellow homes and always wanted one. Our first home had gray siding, the builder didnt offer yellow. Then 20 yrs later when we contracted for a new home in a 50+ community, the developer had already chosen the colors....and to my delight, it was a beautiful creamy yellow! I read some where that yellow homes score very high in curb appeal...something we both already know! Blessings!

  5. I love your banners for each season. Love the yellow homes. I have never had a yellow one. There is something COZY about them. Why do our kids have to grown up and move on. I want to freeze my grandbabies.

  6. Your banner house is very similar to my daughter/blog partner's little craftsman house. They just painted it gray with black shutters and a red door. In fact, their front door is exactly like the one in your banner.

  7. Yellow houses look so cheerful.

I really like the blog header and the idea of changing the look with the seasons.

We watched Groundhog Day the other evening and his room and the design of the house he stayes in looks so lovely, I wondered if I could put it forward as a suggestion for one of your movie house tours? (Also Bear in the Big Blue House - always felt so homely when I saw his quilt cupboard!) xx

  11. I love seeing all your homes...yellow is such a warm and inviting color! My current home is painted with Behr 'Linen' and has yellow tones and we love it mixed with 'Pine' shutters. I am still debating about painting the door red! Thanks for the inspiration!! I love your banner..it's been fun seeing you change it with the seasons!

  12. Hi Susan!!! I live in a yellow house too! It has black shutters but I haven't the nerve the paint the front door red so its a boring black. I have trouble finding wreaths that will show up on it too. I love your new banners and the flashing Christmas lights are sooo cute. I'm definitely coming back this afternoon to see the Halloween one!

  13. Tess, go for it! The worse thing that can happen is you don't like it and paint it back to black. :)

  16. I always think of yellow as such a bright and cheerful color. It can really brighten your day.
I love seeing all of the different headers you've used based on the season/holiday. I am in the middle of looking for a blog designer so I will have to go check out the Blog Fairy.

  17. I love each one of your homes Susan...they are all beautiful! I live in Gadsden which is only 30 minutes from Jacksonville....we have the mountains too...the scenery just takes my breath away sometimes...especially at this time of the year.

  18. I love yellow cottages, too! Our current house has light tan siding and dark brown shutters. The pop of color is the brick red shingles. Kinda drab, I know. I don't know what I was thinking. :/
If I had to do it all over again, I'd have creamy yellow with black shutters.
And I love the banners as they change with the seasons and holidays :)

Great post. I also love yellow houses, though never owned one. Really enjoyed seeing your other homes. It would be fun to see some interior photos - when you get a chance.

    Thanks for sharing!

  20. I love little yellow houses. It was always my dream to have a yellow house. When we finally remodeled our home a few years ago, my dream came true. Yup, yellow house with Ralph Lauren 'Patina' Green shutters and white trim. I love my little yellow house. Even on a dreary day a yellow house is always HAPPY.

  21. Susan, I have a small yellow house with black door and wrought iron railings on the step along with wrought iron window boxes on every window and black shutters. We picked the colour for the house when it was being built.
Love the banners especially the Christmas ones and I notice the changes on the porch. I want to play too!! :)

  29. When my neighbor was planning to paint her house I tried to convince her to use yellow - that way I'd be able to see it every time I looked out. She went with gray :-(

    I love yellow houses, too.

  31. Had left a 2nd comment, but got an error message, so apparently, it didn't post. Saw the scarecrow after my comment. Love it. This is my favorite banner, so far! Like the business cards, too. Did you see the $3 fall salad plates at Wal-mart? I've been avoiding that place like the plague, and was pleasantly surprised to see some nice fall things. I know, like either of us need one more plate! ;o)

  34. I agree yellow houses draw my eye and there is something about the color that seems the quintessential of an inviting, warm and loving home. I've never had that color but I would love to try it!
Your first home was great and so was your 2nd!
Love your new fall banner- how nice that she created multiples for the seasons! Great idea!

  36. Thanks for explaining the house in your banner. I had wondered about that! I love yellow houses but have never lived in one. Great new "nightime" Halloween banner. Reminds me of Bewitched (I'm ageing myself! I named my baby doll Tabitha after that show).
