What's Your Decorating Style? Take This Quiz For The Answer

Something Fun for Today:...
I shared this little decorating quiz about a year ago, and it was soooo much fun...I wanted to do it again. BNOTP has gained a lot of new readers who may not have seen the quiz. Plus, our taste change from time to time...so it might be fun for those of us who took it a year ago, to take it again. :)

If you've been reading BNOTP for very long, you probably know I have a little decorating book addiction. A while back I ordered a book on eBay and just to be nice, the seller threw in an extra book for free. The extra book she included was Decorating Rich...subtitled...How to Achieve a Monied Look Without Spending a Fortune, by Teri Seidman and Sherry Suib Cohen. That subtitle grabs your attention, doesn't it?

The foreword is written by Mario Buatta...and it is one of the better forewords that I've read. It really whets your appetite for what lies ahead in the book; but then, that's what a good foreword is supposed to do.  Mario Buatta briefly mentions the effect known as "puddling," and I had to laugh when I read, "Nothing is worse than curtains that just miss the floor, looking as though they shrank in a flood." LOL I was late in discovering Mario Buatta...never knew about him until a couple of years ago. And now, wouldn't you know...he is basically in retirement. Where was I when he was in his heyday? I would seriously have been a big Buatta fan back then...at least I am now.

Not too far along into this book, specifically beginning on page 10, there's a neat little "decorating quiz" that the author states will give "clues to the textures, colors and accessories to which we are really drawn." She says, "They include the architectural lines you most admire, the era in which your soul really lives and the essence of the decorating signature with which you'll probably be most comfortable."

There are twenty-one fun questions...what say we take it? Remember, there are no right or wrong answers...it's not that kind of quiz.  After you finish, I'd love for you to leave a comment telling me your decorating style and if you thought the quiz hit the mark for you. This book was written quite a few years ago, so you'll notice the t.v. show question is very dated...but it's still a fun and informative quiz.

And now for the analysis, taken verbatim from Decorating Rich. (All photos are from the back cover of Decorating Rich, as well.)

Did you choose mostly As?
The essential you is tailor-made for European Opulence. A traditional, comfortable-yet-formal home is more to your taste than any other signature. Your heart is caught in the look of the fabulous past.

Did you choose mostly Bs?
You're a child of the future, an admirer of modern technology; Classic Contemporary is your sleek, svelte signature.

Did you choose mostly Cs?
Serenely magnificent Oriental Grace is the signature that is most exciting for you. You could go, as well, for a Rich-Mix...any of the other signatures accented heavily with Chinese luxury or Japanese simplicity.

Did you choose mostly Ds?
I would think that American Pedigree would please you enormously. You admire the classicism of our heritage, the integrity of dark, deep woods, the comfort of a deep wing chair.

Did you choose mostly Es?
Country Charm is your kind of posh. The charm of the hearth, the hunt, and naive art make you smile. The richness of the sea or the sun-bleached character of the Southwest are your cup of tea.

Did your choices/answers add up as you expected? Did you learn anything new about yourself and your decorating style? What is your style?

Interesting! This thing is spot on, I think, because I had a tie between D and E. That would be just about right because I love historical homes, but more from the colonial period than the federal period because of the less formal nature of them. That would kind of be a cross between D and E.

Cool.

I got 9 a's and 7 e's. A cross between European Opulence and Country Charm. They are kind of opposites but it still sounds about right!

I think my answers came closest to the pic i would choose of the ones shown, but i don't really consider that "my style." I'm not sure i HAVE style! But if i do, lots of wood, a log home, lots of natural items with a minimum of clutter (& definitely the wood burning stove)!

I am European Opulence, which is just about right as I was born in England and love all things French. Although I do think I am eclectic as I do like modern things especially in the kitchen.
Fun quiz!!

American Pedigree, am I. I do think I am more eclectic because I really didn't have a strong answer to a few questions. The TV choices weren't any of my choices.
I like Country charm as long as it's not too cluttered looking. When I saw the picture for European Opulence, it made me feel claustrophobic.

Far and away, I am European Opulence, but my second is American Pedigree, both of which rely heavily on the past. This definitely fits me...though it's not exactly the way my home is decorated now. It would be, however, if I had the money to buy new furniture and change everything.

I used to be very into modern decor...LOTS of black lacquer and modern lines...and now I HATE that kind of decor. So, definitely, our tastes change as the years go by. Who knows, five years from now, I might be country charm.

Thanks for posting this. IT was fun and insightful.

Have a lovely weekend,
Patti

I have found that I am a complete contrast!!! I am mostly E but very close second was A!! Not sure what that says about me!! I guess it is kind of true since I decorate with an old world country feel.

6 A's, 5 E's 4 B's 3 D's and 2 C's. I'm a European Opulent, Country Charming girl with a dash of Classic Contemporary and American Pedigree thrown in. This must be accurate because I'm always all over the place whenever I take any of these quizzes.

Moral of the Story - Don't put baby in a corner. I like what I likes.

This was so fun! I ended up being European Opulence with American Pedigree a close second. It is pretty much what I expected and I love that at this stage of life I finally feel the freedom to just decorate in a way that gives me pleasure and makes my family feel comfortable! It is a good stage to be in! :-) Thanks for this,
Vanessa

I got 7 A's and 6,E's! Those were my high numbers. European and Country mix..sounds right but I also got 4'B's. I do admire a futurist look but just wouldn't want to live in it! LOL! Fun quiz!

My decorating style is Country Charm...14 E's. So I knew I was right on target with my own gut feelings. I always dreamed of living in a farm like home, with a front porch and fire place. It's funny though, my house is a mismash of my husband's taste and my taste. So it's not totally Country Charm. The family room, office, and master bedroom are close to American Pedigree, one guest room and bath is Beachy Cottage, and the rest is Country Charm. My home lacks cohesiveness. Because I am retired and living on a fixed income, the process of making it solely one style or the other would be extremely slow. ~Ames

I was equal in European Opulance and Country. I find that very interesting! Some of the questions really didn't have an ideal answer for me. Guess that means I don't fit exactly in any particular niche.

This was so much fun!!! I had an overwhelming majority of As and the second was Ds. If I hadn't taken the quiz and just had to chooose photos, I would have chosen A first and D second, so I think this is VERY accurate!!!

Most of my answers were A but I found the picture a little cluttered for my taste. My dining room looks just like that picture too LOL! I chose a few E's and of that picture I found the symmetry appealing. I definitely have to have pairs of everything.

I was split down the middle with European Opulence and Country Charm....which is pretty much right...only I think I lean more toward Farmhouse Cottage than country. Susan, Thank you for this delightful post. It was fun to take. As usual I found myself all over the place. Not sure what that says about me though.
Just based on the photos, I definitely am European Opulence and American Pedigree. I love traditional furniture but at the same time I don't like clutter.
As an aside, I have been one of the "lurkers" who follow you and your party goers each Monday and Thursday. I rarely comment but visit each week. Well, I am taking the plunge. I have my first blog post ready to go for Sunday night. It is not fancy even a little plain. But I consider myself a quick study. Several of your participants have been most kind with assistance and your FAQ's were extremely helpful. I have both buttons on my sidebar and at the bottom of my post. Loved taking this BUT....not sure it turned out right for me. I had 8 A's & 9 E's which would mean a close tie between European Opulence and Country Charm...yet I'm not really either of those. I am not OPULENT anything, but I do like Country French and do like traditional style decorating. I can't stand some Country decorating, such as primitives, quilts on the walls, churns, pine furniture, etc. but do love some features of Country Charm. The picture that appealed to me most was American Pedigree but I do not usually like that type of style. I definitely do NOT like Asian/Oriental or Contemporary. So guess I'm just eclectic! This was fun to do! I've always felt I don't really know my style...still trying to get it right!

Great quiz and got me very close to what I like, the mixing of European-English with Oriental pieces, screans, and accents. Although the dog question it was not really, I'm partial to pugs, but small dogs anyway. The TV weren't my favs, but Dinasty was good.
Thank you Susan, it was fun and very close to what my home looks like.
