Spring Sprucing on the Porch: Welcome to the 113th Metamorphosis Monday!

Hi Everyone! Hope your weekend was fabulous! I had plans to start working on the walls in the office, sanding and patching, sanding and more patching. But Mr. Max had other plans. I couldn't get him to abandon his perch on the desk and I don't think sanding while he's in the room would be such a great idea. Tomorrow, I'll try again and I may have to just lock him out of the room, which he isn't going to like.

So I spent the day doing a little spring fluffing on the porch. It was time to say goodbye to the fall pillows on the swing.

Time to bring out the spring pillows. These are beginning to look a little faded after three summers on the porch but I sort of like their faded, "I've-been-loved-and-used-for-years" look.

The next thing that caught my eye was the fall basket on the door.

Yep, definitely time to do something different on the door. The hutch was spruced up a few weeks ago, HERE.

This was the fall look...

And here's the spring look.

These are my daisies from last year. I may do something different this year, but they will do for now.

I never took the sheers down from last summer.

So they are up and ready for those much anticipated summer breezes.

I've been asked how the sheers are hung here on the porch. (Tablescape can be viewed HERE.)

It was super easy. I just purchased the sheers and wood rods from Walmart. I didn't use metal because I was worried they might rust in the humidity. The rods just rest down into the brackets that came with the rods. I pre-drilled the holes into the wood before mounting the brackets for the curtains. That made installation of the brackets very easy.

Here's how the porch looks without the sheers...just isn't quite the same, is it? (Tablescape can be viewed, HERE.)

And here's the porch with sheers. Much better, I think.

If you have a screened-in porch, a lanai or any kind or porch, consider hanging some sheers. The cost for all the sheers and rods for all 5 windows on the porch was right at $100. Three years later, they still look as nice as the day I bought them, so they have really held up well. I never have any problems with mildew or mold appearing on the sheers because they are polyester and dry within minutes after it rains. (Tablescape can be viewed HERE.)

I've only had to take them down to wash them once in three years and that was just because I figured they needed it after their 2nd year on the porch. They add so much to the enjoyment of the porch. It is wonderfully soothing to sit out here on the porch and watch them swaying in and out from either natural breezes or the breezes created by the fans overhead.

Are you starting to do a little spring sprucing around your home? I'm looking forward to viewing your Before and Afters for this Met Monday!

  2. I feel certain you've answered this before, but what is the overall size of your screened porch? We're planning one right now and yours seems to be the perfect size for what we want to do with ours.

I love your porch posts...and have saved many ideas from you in the past. I made my husband come and look at your pictures to give him an idea of what I wanted. I just love your porch, and every time you post about it I love it...never tire of it. Thanks for the unending ideas.

  10. Hi Susan! Oh, you know how I love your porch! It looks wonderful and the sheers just make it so dreamy. It's still hard for me to realize this is a screened in porch and not windows. I don't know how in the world you keep it so pristine! :)
Poor little Mr. Max! He loves his new sun bathing spot! He really is an adorable little guy.

  11. I just love your porch, Susan! It looks wonderful all decked out for Spring. I have used white cotton curtains on my screened gazebo and it really was a nice effect. If we are still here in the warmer months I may put them up again this year.

  19. I'm still waiting for spring to arrive here! The snow is melting, but there's apparently another 10cms coming by the end of tomorrow. Ugh!

March is such a tease - it's spring.... no, it's winter... no, it's spring... no, it's winter. Make up your mind! ;-)

Your porch looks beautiful. Especially love your swing and the green hutch :-)

  25. Beverly, since my home is 28-29 years old, some of the doors are still wood. That door is an original door so the mullions are wood. I just hammered a teeny nail into the mullion and hung it from that.
They do make realllly strong magnets you can use for doors that are glass where you can't use a nail.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yep, the porch is definitely more inviting with the sheers!

  27. Hi Girlie:
Your porch is looking beautiful and so breezy. Don't you love how the dust just blows through sheers and they stay so clean? I have always used sheers, especially when I would find some with some lace insets.
Are you enjoying your new career? I certainly am enjoying it!
    Hugs, Lisa

I always enjoy viewing your porch.
The sheers definitely add the final touch. You sure thought out the layout of your porch really well. A place for everything.
I'd sure love to see it in person one day.

  35. I don't think that I would ever leave that porch. who needs the rest of the house? Just beautiful!

  36. Susan, my post is about me going through a metamorphosis today! I hope that's ok. I really felt transformed on my day out alone as I slowly find pieces of me I've left behind to raise my kids. I also am glad you showed your sheers - I have a screened porch and want to try it. Part of my shopping spree today I bought a cotton throw rug for that porch so I can't wait for the weather to warm up more and I can get the porch back together. Have a great week!

  37. Your porch is very beautiful. I've considered sheers on our back deck, which is on the second story and railed in. You've persuaded me it's the thing to do!

  41. I agree the curtains added a nice soft relaxed affect to the area. I love that tablescape with the red transferware...that was when I first found your blog and fell in love! Spring is still coming in this neck of the woods! (Still have snow melting) It will come on quickly when April is here! I've been straightening some closets indoors and dreaming about my outside plans for my garden area.

  42. The sheers make the whole room! I love it!

  43. Your porch is one of my favorites - I am still looking for enough sheers for my enclosed porch- I so would love it to look like this-

In every wonderful transformation there has to be the before- my link up is the nasty before the transformation post. Hopefully the beautiful one is coming!

  46. I love your porch! I have seen it a number of times and it still takes my breath away. The photo of the curtain blowing takes me away - better than a bath in Calgon. I featured your post on my blog - http://firstadream.blogspot.com/2011/03/inspired-by-spring-decorating.html

  47. Susan, I never tire of looking at your welcoming screened porch. I have serious "porch envy" especially in the summer when our west facing deck is blazing.
Glad you got the blog disappearance problem sorted out.
    Have a great week.

  48. I live in Maryland and I do have a nice screened porch. However, we get terrible periods in the spring and late summer where everything is covered in pollen. Do you have that problem and how does it affect the curtains. I would love to try this.

  49. Hi Susan, I just linked up for your party for the first time. I'm a newbie and I'm just now joining parties. I put up a recipe. I wasn't sure if that was acceptable, but I saw that other people had put up some recipes. I'm glad that you posted about your sheers on your porch. Just last night my husband and I were just discussing putting up something to block the sun on our front porch. I researched outdoor shades, but I just didn't like the look. Your sheers look perfect but I was thinking I could use those fabric shower curtains that repel water. I'm on a roll now!

  54. Hey Susan. The porch looks great as always! I don't know if you had a chance to look last week, but I did a porch redo myself. If you have a minute would you go look? We have a sunporch that runs almost the entire length of the house on the front(We live in an original cottage in Fairhope, AL). Anyway, I have been trying to figure out something to do on the windows... Was thinking gingham valances, because I think it needs some color. I would love it if you would look, and see what you think.

  57. Susan, your porch is beautiful. I's so glad you mentioned how quickly the sheers dry after getting wet. I want to put sheers up on my porch but was afraid after a rain I'd end up with stained curtains. Sure didn't want to be running up a ladder every week to wash them. I'm think though that the drop cloth look might look better with my porch design and coloring. I don't know, I'll have to decide. Thanks as always for the lovely photo's. You are such an inspiration.

  63. I love your porch, just beautiful. Although I have often wondered how you keep things from blowing over. The breezes here in Missouri would blow over a lamp and candlesticks or anything of heighth sitting on a table for that matter. Also, everything stays so clean and white, how do you not have a film of dust on everything like anything I have outdoors does? Just wondering....:)

  64. Susan, you know how much I love your porch. It is dressed so beautifully for Spring.
We came back from a warm vacation hoping that Spring had sprung here, not so, it is dull and damp so my Spring plans for outside are on hold.

  73. Susan, I am curious to know what kind of hutch you have on your porch that is not affected by the weather. We live in Florida and our porch would be too humid for wood furniture to survive. Right now it is covered with yellow pollen :-( I always love to see your porch all decorated. It gives me a lot of inspiration. One day I am going to do a tablescape on my porch, as I just love your fresh designs.
