The First Ever...Sunday Favorites

Welcome to the first ever Sunday Favorites...a brilliant event created by Chari at Happy to Design!

So, grab that cup of coffee or hot tea and let's get going! :-) For this first ever Sunday Favorites, I'll be sharing a post I ran on September 9th of last year, just 3 weeks after I created Between Naps on the Porch. I called this post, For the Love of Books, Part I. You can click on any of the pics to enlarge, thus, enabling you to read the titles and authors better. Hope you enjoy!

Maybe it's part of the reason one of my majors in college was English...or maybe it's just all the amazing possibilities and dreams found within. Whatever it is, I have a serious love of books. Now, take one part "love of books" and stir in a heaping cup of "love of decorating" and you have yourself one large decorating book souffle...uh, I mean, one large decorating book collection. :-)

If you tip-toed into my study and peeked into my Someday Notebook...you know...the notebook that held the dream of the front porch for so long, you would find another dream...that of the desire for a home library. The seldom used "formal" living room in my home has been begging me to install built-in book shelves down one long wall and on either side of it's fireplace. Someday, I say...someday. ~~~SIGH~~~

But for now, I must be content to tuck my books into whatever nook and cranny I can find. I thought today I'd share some of my favorites books with you. However, I feel it my solemn duty to warn you, once this decorating book addiction thingy takes hold, it will have you in its grip for an undetermined amount of time. But seriously, can you think of a better addiction? :-)

If you love classic, traditional style, you will love any of Mary Carol Garrity's books. Since the photo above was taken, I've purchased three more of her books: Nell Hill's Christmas at Home, Nell Hill's Decorating Secrets and Nell Hill's Feather Your Nest. If you live anywhere near Atchison, Kansas, you have probably already been inside her wonderful home furnishings store, called Nell Hill's...and if so, I am officially green with envy! :-)

I love antiques and the books below are pure candy for this girl's sweet tooth.

Bringing Tuscany Home is by Frances Mayes, the same author who wrote Under the Tuscan Sun. You may remember the movie, bearing the same title.

Bunny Williams is one of my very favorite authors...it's simple...she writes a book...me wants it! :-) An Affair with a House is a delight to read...I love the way Mrs. Williams describes her long and involved love affair with her home. And you thought you were the only one!

Winter House by Charlotte Moss is the equivalent of comfort food in the book world...or at least it is for me. The picture of her home on page 19 showing her garland draped front door, surrounded by glowing lanterns and candlelight, always makes my heart skip a few beats. With fall upon us and winter waiting in the wings, this would be an excellent choice for one of those long, chilly nights ahead.

Amazon begins it's description of Hunt Country Style this way, "Wood-paneled libraries, sumptuously appointed interiors, mudrooms, paddocks, and stables... " Yep, that about covers it! Gorgeous book, loaded with lots of interesting history covering the tradition of the hunt country and it's gorgeous homes.

Have you ever wondered what the homes of authors, William Faulkner, Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, and Herman Melville looked like...and not just on the outside, but inside, too? Well, it's all in American Writers at Home, as well as photos of the homes of seventeen more famous authors.
And in Writers' Houses, you can tour the homes of Mark Twain, Virginia Woolf, William Butler Yeats, Ernest Hemingway, and Dylan Thomas, as well as the homes of an additional sixteen well-loved writers. It positively gave me chills, seeing the actual desk where William Faulkner sat, when he wrote so many of his most famous works.

If you love English Country style, you will love anything written about or by the English design firm of Colefax and Fowler. 'Nuf said! :-)

In Adventures with Old Houses, the author, Richard Jenrette, who also happens to be a former executive of a well-known Wall Street investment firm, details his life's dedication to collecting and restoring six magnificent, historic U.S. homes. Interestingly, the forward is written by Prince Charles.

A few more great English Country design books:

Here's one for all you Blue and White fans...I know my hand is in the air!

Hope you enjoyed a peek into my decorating library.

  2. This is the first time I have left a comment on your blog. I am new to blogging but have visited your blog several times. I have found that we have a lot in common including your red dining room. It is gorgeous and mine is red as well. Now I see that we have some decorators that we both love. I am a huge fan of Mary Carol Garrity and discovered that upon looking at some of her books and fell in love with some of the things she showcases she also carries in her shop. I have called and ordered from her many times referenceing the page number and book from which I saw it. As you may already know she doesn't do any online shopping yet but I thought you might like to know this info.

I am also a big fan of Bunny Williams and had the good fortune to meet her at an antique show where she was giving a lecture in a little town just north of me about two months ago. She is very personable and I was able to chat with her for a while. I was thrilled

Just so you know, if you haven't already, check out Charles Faudree. His books deal with French Country but I myself like to mix French and English Country in my home.

I love your blog, it's beautiful and will visit often. BTW, I share a similar obsession with interior design books. I think it is an illness but one I won't be giving up soon.

  7. Susan - I have to agree with Keetha. After I read all your book titles I slobbered over what was placed on top. LOL You have quite the collection. I don't have as many Interior Design books, b/c my collection is interspersed with Gardening and my cherished Cookbooks, too.
I have to spread the wealth. :-)
This was a great re-post! Don't you just love this new Event? (Thanks Chari!)
    Hugs, Barb

  13. Wow, I love all your wonderful decorating books, but I also love the way you use them to elevate other wonderful things. It is so nice to have them where you can grab them, and they are such eye candy also. Another great tip for all of us to keep them out and use them as pedestals for lamps and etc. Thanks. Hugs, Marty

  16. * Susan, THIS has always been one of my VERY FAV POSTS you've done..EVER!!! Maybe it's because I love & collect decorating/design books, too... maybe it's because of what you "pair" them with, making them look even MORE appealing, if that's POSSIBLE!... maybe it's because of your terriffic photography or MAYBE, just MAYBE, it's because everything looks so warm n' welcoming n' "nice"~~~ just like YOU, dear friend. Am SO GLAD you chose THIS to repost!!! XOXO Linda *

  17. I too am a serious book lover....but yours are all classy and beautiful and inspiring....mine are all murder mysteries...somehow they don't have the same pizzazz when used in decorating! But then you probably could make even my books look good!

  20. Susan, I have always loved the post about your decorating books. But, more than that I love how you use them as an accessory in your beautiful home. I really adore that little spaniel lamp. One of these days I may just us it as an inspiration.

  30. I adore blue and white. My heart skips a beat every time I run across something blue and white. I love much the same books you do. And I thought Diane Lane in that movie was very classy. (Under A Tuscan Sun) I too have a love affair with books, and would rather have books than most anything. I like to merely look at them on the shelves!

  31. Oh how I would a reall library, or at least a library wall! I like to use books here and there in my home decor, since I don't have a specified place for all of them. Just love all the ways you display and use yours. You may see that I changed my picture. I just tired of seeing it when I sign in to comment on the blogsites, so I went back to one of my first pictures on RMS. :) Hugs, and have a great week. Jan

  32. It would help if I could spell and talk this morning! I meant of course, to say how I would love to have a real library. Enjoy your Sunday!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I have those Nell Hill books, too...so very inspiring! I can see a lot of similarities in her decorating and yours!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Susan, I am a huge book lover and have hundreds and hundreds of them. I have some of the ones you have shown.

Your displays are lovely and your attention to detail is spellbinding.

    Love it.

  35. So glad I have friend in crime! My "honey" swears one side of the foundation is going to crack "due to the weight of the books & magazines" I have everywhere. :) Gotta love it! Have a great week.

  36. Oooh Susan - you got some real goodies there! Since that post was long before I jumped on the Blog Bandwagon, I'm so glad I got to see it today! You were the first to comment on my book post, so you know I share your affinity for decorating with books. I will have to bookmark this post so I'll have all those good titles at my disposal. Thanks! ~Kim

  37. Oh my, Susan, we have the same addiction! I've got STACKS of decorating books, and pore over them again and again.

I got Martha Stewart's "New Old House" just recently, as it is about the renovation of an 1830s house that is remarkably similar to ours -- looking at woodwork, hardware, construction etc., in the book was like looking at it here at home.

I guess we could have worse addictions! (I majored in English, too ... we are paying for past sins! hahaha....)

  38. There is no addiction more noble than a book addiction....I'm with you about installing shelving. I have a wall begging for a handyman's hammer and saw.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I understand about books! I have them stashed everywhere!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Ooh, now I want to come over to your house and browse through all your decorating books! I doubt my public library will have most of them ;-)

I too dream of a library, filled with old musty books...right now I have only one bookshelf worth of books (not counting college texts), so I couldn't justify a library even if I had the space! But I can dream...

    ReplyDelete
  41. That was for sure a blog worth re-posting! BEAUTIFUL things!

Also.. I love your layout! (This is my first visit =D) Mine is very similar but your colors POP so much more! If you wouldn't mind.. I might have to change my layout. =)
